Whatever the reality of North Korean life is, it's a country that recovered from an apocalyptic war before losing its only significant ally in its attempt to out-build and survive a military dictatorship rival that was backed by the only intact superpower. They're building socialism out of rubble with nuclear weapons pointed at their capital. That's not going to be utopian any more than a cultural revolution after centuries of looting and genocide and insanely misogynistic imperialism will be. So I can be sympathetic to the limitations of what North Korea can provide as it rebuilds something out of nothing with the mountainous regions of Korea and I can understand wanting to leave that for the same reason people fled East Germany.
I like that when they do, there seems to be three alternative lives. They might become some kind of South Korean/American intelligence asset and join the active war against their own families so that the US can pave over it as a highway to war with China. They might do the reeducation camp circuit in South Korea and join regular society, a country with one of the most hostile and socially toxic work cultures in the world apart from the country turning their homeland into a highway to China. The third alternative is becoming a youtube algorithm slave, a literal human zoo where we feed them hamburgers to see if they react like people. That algorithm apparently takes facial expressions into account so they have to be sufficiently excited about performing tricks for hundreds of thousands of people. They get I Have a Mouth and I Must Scream Sufficiently for Views.
If the grass looked greener it's because we poisoned it until it's green concrete incapable of sustaining life. Not the first man to risk his life for wet ass-pussy but the effort:reward ratio wasn't there.
In order for socialism to win, we have to consider things dialectically. I wouldn't want to live in North Korea either but I understand the context of why it is the way it is. I don't like the Kims to the point that I mockingly portray my dog as one, but I understand how that came out of the trauma of their colonial exploitation and WW2 and the Korean War. I understand the repressive collectivisation in the same way Stalinism arose, a necessary response to existing between two wars of extermination against him with the need to match the industrial capacity of a superpower with a century's head start. Unless you have some better option for a country that lost almost every building within your grandparents' lifetime, that lives under the daily existential threat of the most advanced military in the world looking to repeat Afghanistan for its mineral wealth and land border with China, what is a reactive dismissal of every socialist experiment going to accomplish other than armchair quarterbacking for US imperialism? What's your DSA Pyongyang alternative that allows North Korea to survive to 2021? Do the Kims exist because North Koreans are ant people who can't imagine the same ideas from the same books as you or because the country is economically blockaded and the prime target of the US imperial apparatus in the region? Would your North Korean Bernie not be any more secure from election fraud than regular Bernie was?
