    I don't think it would replace sex because of technology itself. Capitalism would just make things too difficult to foster an intimate relationship and VR would be easier for a lot of people.

    It would be marketed as a way to clock in more hours at work.

    Then the VR sex would be plagued with ads and microtransactions to squeeze more money out of people.

    In an ideal world (or just not hellworld) virtual sex could theoretically be used for trauma therapy, safe space for experimentation, or a solution for long distance partners. But one can hope, I guess.
