Some of the more expensive models are battery powered and boast all sorts of features like being water proof for the shower. Epilating is quite painful at first as your hair follicles weaken, so I'd hesitate recommending something expensive start off with. If you like the results of the cheap one, but find it lacking in some way then maybe think about upcgrading.
I trim mine to about 3/4 inch with an electric trimmer. I use an epilator on my butt hair though

Ouch, why not a simple razor? It works for me
it lasts as long as waxing (2-3 weeks), and when the hairs grow back in they aren't scratchy like with a razor
But pulling your butt hair is really painful.
Only the first couple of times and it is a fraction of the cost of waxing
