You said it perfectly; the older I get, the more I realize morality is a human construct for the benefits of cooperation. It was necessary for early survival, then became weaponized against ourselves through the rest of human history.
Some good people die suffering, some bad people die peacefully. Karma doesn't exist, we just pick out stories from the times it works the way it should. Its really disheartening because nature is indifferent in sorting it out; all the while we were told in a cosmic sense the universe would act as a fair judge.
