    I don't quite get the hate for it, I will confess I've not read the book (mea culpa), but I've seen both the Lynch version as well as the SciFi channel miniseries, and this is definitely chanelling Lynch but it could've gone harder imo. Not enough horror. My only perplexity was with everyone fighting with short swords like some kind of weird misplaced medieval army, when projectile weapons clearly exist in-universe.

        That seems like a significant design shortsight.

        Even so, if that's why everyone has tacitly decided to fight hand-to-hand, then woudln't they be better off fighting like Roman maniples or Greek hoplites?

          It's worth noting this is a kind of backwards feudal society projected into the future. I always assumed it was a mix of honor/nobility that kept them focused on single combat.

      My one issue with the movie is how it does not explain some things that are explained well in the book, like while they all have swords. It's because of their personal shield thingy
