So one of my DnD groups is starting a campaign and I've been wanting to play a fighter for the first time. But I'm tempted to pick up a level in Barb for the rage. Has anyone done this and if so how did it go?

The plan is for a crit fishing halforc champion with great weapon master. The crit on 19 with an extra die, rerolling 1s and 2s plus the optional -5 Mod for a +10 damage every attack should make him hit like a truck.
Ahh nice, that sounds like a cool build!
Keep in mind savage attacks allows you to roll one additional dmg die on crits, so for mauls/greatswords it's "only" a 25% increase in crit dmg, rather than 50% for greataxe. I do still recomend great weapon fighting/maul/greatsword, (i have that on my fighter/paladin) as the reroll 1s/2s have a markable impact on dmg when you swing 2d6. you still spike your dmg on crits, but your bad rolls are much better than with greataxe
I'm running a greatsword master paladin in a different campaign and rerolling two 1s into a 6 and a 5 sold me on it. That 1/3 chance you will be able to up the damage is so good.
100%! i was languishing with sword/board throughout a campaign that lasted two years.. 3 sessions into a new campaign, i have a maul, i'm suddenly killy! feels good man
