Often people do things like this because they're genuinely in distress but have no way to sincerely approach the problem. Humor is a way of putting social feelers out, like "Is this okay? Is what I'm feeling normal? Do you all see that I'm feeling this way? Should something be done?" Usually I like to speak to them one-on-one and express that it makes me feel worried for them and concerned for how they are feeling. Recommend therapy in a way that isn't judgemental or stigmatizing, sharing your personal experiences if you have any. Sometimes they aren't receptive at all but the fact that you tried to have this conversation with them often will plant seeds for the future.
