We’re just gonna pretend like covid doesn’t exist anymore. Restrictions will lift, news reports will dwindle, cases will slowly stop being tracked and the public will move on. But the virus will still be here.

If our local hospitals are over capacity, and there are no beds available, will we even know? Sure there will be tiktoks or whatever but how are you supposed to know if it’s your hospital?

I think that just not acknowledging it, as opposed to doing nothing but still acknowledging it and providing data, is the most horrific outcome so of course this is what the monkeys paw did when our societies said “I wish I didn’t have to think about COVID anymore”

How are we ever supposed to get “back to normal” now? The world has inexorably and permanently changed for the worse, as always.

It's been clear for a while that the country would eventually just give up on covid, but I really didn't realize this would involve getting rid of case numbers and such entirely. That's what makes me most anxious out of all of this. If we're going to have continuous waves of covid I need to see when the wave is peaking and receding so I can plan doctor appointments, travel, etc. It's a real testament to how absolutely fucked this place is that they're not just neglecting the issue, they're being actively malicious towards anyone who wants to reduce their risk.

We still have case data… for now. I fully expect that reporting infrastructure to be dismantled though as our leadership has no foresight (if they did they wouldn’t be lifting mask mandates)

It's a risky move to lift mandates right as BA.1 is dying down and cases of BA.2 are cropping up nationwide. I don't really understand the timing unless they know for sure that BA.2 won't cause another wave, or if the idea is to get us innoculated to a total lack of mitigation efforts at a high point of infections.

"We don't have enough raw numbers to precisely calculate how many vaccinated people are dying in America. The reason for this, bluntly, is that most institutions are afraid to publicize data that could imply vaccines have limitations or the crisis is not heavily under control."

"There are also major data collection issues regarding breakthrough cases. However, many jurisdictions DO have this data and are either not reporting it or not reporting it in a way that's easy to find or understand. I've checked the CDC and all 50 states."

Yes, anything that promotes vaccine hesitancy is heavily censored by Big Tech. Say anything that contradicts the authorities and find that the algorithm doesn't recommend your content any more. Mess with the bull, get the horns.

I worked from home pre-covid but we have a satellite office we are allowed to use with a few hot desks.

Our regional boss was great during the pandemic; however, he now wants everyone to come in at least once a month to "familiarize" ourselves with our co-workers. I don't work with anyone that is local to my area. Why the fuck should I go in to meet randos who live near by me who I don't even interact with at work?

This "return to normal" bullshit is going to be an epic disaster when people who had been taking COVID seriously stop doing so because of this manufactured consent going on that the pandemic is somehow over during its most infectious phase ever.

Same thing here. My work is allowing people to work from home, but my manager wants us to meet up every 2 weeks in the office for “connection” purposes. It is of course, “entirely optional”, but in the sense that if I didn’t go, I’d be the only one not going and would inevitably be criticized for not doing enough to “connect” with my colleagues.

I don’t want to connect with my colleagues anyway. They all love Bitcoin and Elon Musk, and act awkwardly shocked when I mention that I’m worried for my disabled daughter’s health due to Omicron’s higher severity in young children. ”It’s milder in children though, right? And it’s mild to begin with anyway, I’m sure it will be fine”. :cringe:

It’s particularly poignant because it seems to be a phenomenon limited to the “democratic west”

Other places have much less of an issue because, shocking, there’s widespread access to testing and people wear fucking masks

Implying there will still be an er in months or years when all the labor is worked into such a sleep deprived, stressed out vulnerable state they all die of covid too.

Or, preferably, they all just quit. Everyone has a tolerance limit for going into literally hell day in and out and having it consume your while life while all the powers that be just give up and abandon you.

It all feels like gas lighting to anyone that takes covid even a bit seriously. What are we supposed to do? I still try to stay as safe as possible, but I'll want to do things every now and then. Last weekend I went to the movies, tried to pick a showing that wasn't as crowded at least. That was okay, but I won't be doing it regularly. Next month I'll be flying to another country. I'm vaxxed/boosted, I'll be double masking and being super careful, so hopefully no issues there

Outside of that? I get groceries once a week, go to the laundromat once a week, and go to work... that's it lol. I guess that's life now

What are you masking with? If you're going to be in an interior space with stagnant air for extended periods of time, like a movie theater or a plane before the circulation system is running, the bullshit the CDC feed us of cloth layered over surgical is just not good enough.

KN95 for extended period of time situations and will have the cloth mask over it. Does the cloth mask not add anything at that point?

~60% of KN95s in the US are fake, so definitely check yours if you haven't. The cloth mask in the double-mask recommendation, AFAIK, is meant to improve the fit of the surgical mask. If you've got a good fit on your KN95 then it's redundant. You really have to be anal about the fit though because it's hard to feel the difference between e.g. 10% filtration leak and 1% filtration leak, but the difference in infection protection is very large when you're in a high exposure situation.

Thanks for the heads up! I'll be sure to check when ordering them and my current masks.

As far as double masking with a cloth mask, then I'll just do that to make the fit as good as possible

How is it that they seem to have the iron discipline to literally TURN DOWN vacation or higher wages because they as workers need to make the "noble sacrifice" to keep the economy afloat. But we are cool with COVID because "but I don't FEEL like doing what needs to be done?"

Yeah the thing that gets is do we just have hospitals at full capacity from now on? Were not going to build more, are people just gonna get COVID, not go, and die? It seems real bad. Realizing more and more we are never going back to a pre COVID world in a meaningful way.

Right so the safest option will be just hunkering down during historical surge periods which is summer in the south and winter in the north (although with omicron maybe both?)

But at what point do you go from cautious to paranoid? There will be a higher social cost to taking precautions, one that wasn’t there before, not to mention why would you self isolate when there’s no real, actual threat? But without data or reporting how will we ever know?

yeah I have no idea what you can even do as an individual to hunker down, youre going to have to go outside. Honestly im more worried about the other stuff, the accidents that could land me in a hospital with no beds left. The 24 hour wait for ER treatment, seems bad.
