It's terrifying that this kind of tech will be utterly private and proprietary at its foundation. It always makes me think of the tech dystopia movies/books and how there's always some resistance group who is against the technology. I find myself more and more identifying with that kind of thing. I always loved technology and science. But it's such a slave to capitalism at this point that I'd almost rather do without than to keep going. I used to be the kind of person who wanted augmentations. Chips under my skin to unlock doors and pay for things. Permanent google-glass type thing. Colonies on Mars. Self-driving cars. But seeing what Musk is and the kind of people chomping at the bit for this stuff has turned me off it.
If we're going to do actual brain implants then it needs to be publicly funded and owned and controlled. We're really heading towards techno-feudalism and it sucks.

Reverse engineering is theoretically illegal, but it's also really fun and you get to share your work with others...thereby allowing hobbyists access to technology (which is just a stack of methodical operations)
