nothing short of completely restructuring everything about our society is needed to save the planet.

People get mad so fucking hard when I say this. It's like a gut revulsion. They immediately want to point to people they'd rather kill before that should happen. They think I want to take away everything that brings them joy, but actually I just want to take away wasteful and unnecessary trash. I'd be for an audit of some sort before a thing can go into mass production, proving its necessity/value vs its impact.

cars, planes, meat, plastic, jobs, social media, "healthcare", advertising, and i'm sure there are others. All bad, all actively making your life worse, all killing the planet, and all are things that people think they like or at least are needed for a modern society to exist.

By social media do you mean specifically gamified shit like Facebook and Instagram, or any platform that allows you to talk to people over the internet?

Capitalism has convinced Westoids that the only way you can get happiness is from consumption, so people react very harshly when you suggest any sorts of limits on consumption.

The hilarious irony is that recycling is a scam. They just throw it all into a landfill anyway.

    • sappho [she/her]
      ·

But since recycling is a "green expectation" I feel guilty whether or not I take the time to rinse and sort everything anyway.

It's like how colorful bendy straws used to be one of my tiny joys in life but now not using plastic straws is a "green expectation" (ignore all the other single use plastics that go through your household on a daily basis though!) so I don't have them anymore.

All my guilt and energy redirected towards meaningless bullshit while the planet burns.

Sucks because we still have "turn off the lights!" greenwashing even though LEDs use like, 10 watts.

I am not gonna find a source for this but I read at some point that electricity use for lighting didn’t decrease since the switch to LEDs, we just started using lights 10x as much as before

Yeah, I believe it. Whenever I upgrade my base's lighting in minecraft from Incandescent to LED, I always use the opportunity to light up more of the base while keeping the energy use the same.

Recycling happens. Just on a much, much, smaller scale and with many fewer materials than we are led to believe. With plastics being especially egregious.....

New England is CT, RI, MA, VT, NH (cringe) and ME

I’m being a little tongue in cheek when I say southern CT isn’t included but the southwestern quadrant of CT is basically a giant NYC suburb and more culturally aligned with the worst aspects of New York City than New England, it’s a vibe thing, the further east you go away from New York the less pronounced the effect.

It’s all driven by the routes of the MTA commuter rail and lower income taxes in CT, so basically all the reactionary finance bros live in Greenwich which is about as far out as you can go while still having a decent commute into the city

There was an active project to turn it into a libertarian state by migrating there. It never made it quite that far, but the politics have shifted a fair amount.

New England starts north of I-84, Greenwich, Norwalk, Fairfield etc like to pretend like it’s New England but they’re just suburbs for corporate lawyers and finance bro shitheads. It’s more like Westchester than anything else. Those planes are probably launching out of westchester airport which should be the first target of any nuclear strike, if you’re reading this president Xi

I always have to sing that line to myself - "even old New York was once New Amsterdam" -because my brain always associates "York" with a place in England, even though I am fully aware of the fact that New York was named after some Dutch slaver. It's just a weird mental glitch I guess!

        • Lin Biao
        • Dag Hammarskjöld
        • Paul Wellstone
        • Thomas Hale Boggs, Sr, and Nick Begich

I hate everything about the super bowl. I follow the regular season, I love watching the playoffs, but I chose to watch the Waste Management Phoenix Open over the commercial bowl.

Especially when they have the refs nudge the game so that the big market home team gets what they want. Wilson made an incredible play batting down that ball without any holding that was called which could have led to a defensive stop like they got against the Chiefs, but we'll never know now. Defense is so illegal and shit is so rigged I think I'm done entirely with the nfl, all we'll see is small market teams get robbed to craft narratives.

Yeah, I watched the highlights and that was a straight up bullshit call. Not the first time the refs "nudged" the game for the Rams. Remember that PI no call in the NFC championship game vs the Saints? I say this as a (very casual) Rams fan.
