Seeing stories about Americans volunteering and going to fight in Ukraine more than anything just makes me sad.
Anecdotally, from the CNN story I just watched covering the phenomenon, they spoke to one man in his late 30s or early 40s whose reason for going to Ukraine was that he was unmarried and didn't have any kids. The other person they spoke to was a former Marine and combat veteran who appeared to be already in-country and had four children at home.
This is what alienation does to people. Putting aside the propaganda and other factors, a lot of these people are looking to die but don't want their families or friends to think of them that way.
I wish I could tell these people to not despair, it will be better some day, but I don't know if it will. I just know there are battles that need to be fought here and to not throw your lives away for international capital.
If only he was as motivated to fight climate change. He could even stay home and not get slaughtered.
Even then, there's plenty of hills to die on where it matters at home.
Relatively speaking, staying home would alone be fighting climate change, in fact. (Though, of course, it would be even better to actively do more....)

Tbh if I was at this stage of my life, and it was 2014 when all this shit kicked off, I'd have gone to the Donbas to fight in a volunteer battalion on the DPR side. I was really intrigued by the idea of it but still felt young and like I had some potential for a normal meaningful life in the US. Now I realize the past 8 years have been a waste but it's basically too late to go over there and make any sort of difference. I'd be more of a hindrance now that Russian forces are backing them formally.
