I didn't care for the Gossip Girl Risk Analyst but on re-watch it's an amazing film. Not something like Big Short that tries to treat one random group of wall street crooks as the 'Good Guys'.
The cast is S-Tier. Performances are great and the script is superb. I don't know why it gets slept on. The midnight meeting with the senior partners is so tense! Jeffery Irons goes so hard in the scene at the end, "it's just money" is the most cold-blooded line in the film.
It hits all the notes of a disaster movie without the Rolland Emmerich action ( a good thing). You have the start of just another normal day. Small rumblings of trouble to come. The one guy who sees it coming trying to convince people who won't listen. Then everyone sees it. They have to come to terms with the comet heading towards them. Then disaster strikes. The characters have to then make sense of their new reality. The catharsis is that the disaster was a good thing because the company was able to side-step the comet enough to survive. Oh and there's another comet coming but that's okay too because they're in a really good position to profit from it.
Just finished the movie, decided to watch it because of this post. Just a really solid movie throughout. There’s a scene right at the end of the film where the head of the firm gives a speech and basically says that capital is an evil and irrational system (and he doesn’t care because he can profit off it) that was worth the entire runtime.
I see Kevin Spacey in the credits, is it a prominent role?
I think it's prominent and I think off-screen issues and weirdness aside he ruins every scene he's in which is pretty unfortunate since the movie is decent. I knew he was in it going in and still watched though
I saw this when it was new and it blew me away. Still good for a rewatch every few years.
