Turns out the solution, according to the OP, is for everyone to compete in the free market harder :brainworms:

The real problem today is that Canada has yet to find a way to grow and finally compete against the long established titans in private markets like Amazon, Warner Bros, AT&T, Google, Microsoft, Ford, Facebook, J&J, Coca-cola etc. As a result, we have no choice but to prop our economy on the housing market and foreign "investment".

All of this said, and this is going to sting a little, it is on Canadians to fix this - not just our government. Everyone needs to take ownership of this mess and compete in every industry we can, to provide better solutions, and to become titans ourselves.

Only then will you start to see a better and more affordable Canada.

Does he really think that the issue with housing prices is the fact that Canada doesn't have enough huge corporations? What a bizarre take, and he doesn't even suggest how he thinks that would help the situation.

oh look, someone bothered to press him on it: https://www.reddit.com/r/britishcolumbia/comments/tcxc2i/the_housing_market_isnt_the_problem_it_is_a/i0gjc1r/

How do you suggest “everyone” fixes this?

Genuinely compete in private markets with comparable or innovative products/services as a start.

LOL please keep down voting logic. I hate whenever Reddit stops being it's predictable self.

whenever people try to push that "we can't rely on the government to fix this, we have to do it ourselves" libertarian brain worm, i say that wholesome line i heard somewhere that is specifically designed to fuck with those people and make them sputter out some weird, misplaced contempt:

"'Government' is just the word we use when we try to do things together."

His argument doesn't even make sense. Okay, I start Canadian Google™. That lowers the price of housing... how? As if tech hubs like San Francisco don't have as bad or worse housing costs.

I'm honestly surprised that isn't brought up as a radicalization tool for capitalists.

"Isn't it interesting how the success of a company in the area punishes the rest of us by raising the cost of living? Maybe our problem isn't have-nots gaming the system, but rich landowners trying to make an easy buck off the success of local workers without working for it."
