Embrace the plastic paddy spirit. All culture is commodity under capitalism, might as well enjoy it if its not targeting vulnerable groups. It's not like south Boston is being systematically oppressed by people dressing up as the Notre Dame mascot for one day out of the year.

Edit: apologies if this came off as glib but I know one too many self-proclaimed Irish Americans who seethe at the "fakeness" of St. Patrick's Day every year yet know absolutley nothing about the actual history or culture of the island. They just want an excuse to get mad at people enjoying "their" holiday

Often times I do enjoy the "culture" however in some cases It is not in fact possible for me to enjoy and I am tired of pretending. Also, fair enough on the second point, the vast majority of "irish" Americans are in fact obnoxious as hell.

US American holidays make a lot more sense when realize there are significant financial interests in perpetuating them. In the case of St. Pats it's the bar & restaurant business. Well, other than veterans and memorial day, but those serve the interests of the bougies in other ways. Even the 4th of July, that's usually the busiest day/days of the year for grocery stores.
