I mean I'm sure plenty did. War is hell, and lots of people run away from it. Being a coward is a lot saner than being a fighter most of the time. And, From what I remember the Kurds were telling people not to come at one point because they were about to get massacred by the Turks and they didn't want foreign volunteers coming in just to die for nothing to a Turkish air strike.
That's a good point. Even if you go way off road on your way to Ukraine you're still a white person and English is widely spoken throughout Europe. I'm not sure if you'd have as much luck trying to get around in some random part of Kurdistan.
