I don’t think it’s a matter of “too far gone” per se, it’s that his administration has clearly chosen a path and throwing a bone to progressives isn’t going to make that path any less obvious. They’re going to lose because they suck. If they wanted to win, they would have to choose not to suck, rather than trying to find some sort of compromise between sucking and not sucking.
