It seems like an interesting thing to think about and critique, but I'm amazed the professor got away with actually showing porn in class. Must be tenured, lol.
For a history course focused on East Asia during industrialization, my professor assigned this Japanese short novel that was clearly just softcore femdom erotica and telling us it was about social change or whatever. Wish I remembered the title.
The only book I'm familiar with that was similar to what you described was The Pillow Book (枕草子, Makura no Sōshi) by lady Sei Shōnagon from the Heian period, but that's waaaaay before the industrialist post-Tokugawa period
Yeah this was definitely more modern era, the main character was an early salaryman. Also, written by a lame horny guy, not a presumably based domme lady.
Had a prof in a 101 history of film class screen the deepthroat scene from Deepthroat. A few months later I heard him being interviewed on the local public radio station about his book about the movie Caligula. This was circa 2009.

I had a 19th century lit class where we looked at porn comics and erotic lit, and it was a newer professor, so maybe it depends on the school too
I think it's like one of those things where you have to prove the academic merit
