I've been out a work for a while now, and every app I've put in has gone nowhere. I have a bit of savings, but I really do need a source of income. Is proofreading on Fiverr a good gig? Is there anything I should know before I start?

:this: is the answer here. I work with a bunch of people (designers, illustrators, writers) who are/started freelance. Use it if you have to for a few bits of work and then look elsewhere, as depending where you are in the world the money is dreadful on Fiverr and you'll have a hard time increasing your rate to something sustainable if you're still on there or clients know you were.
If you can you'd be better off finding your first clients elsewhere by throwing together a cheap website and seeing if you can get a gig or two from friends or local businesses, perhaps even for free (once or twice), to use as previous work.
I'll confirm local businesses are an excellent way to start out if you're a schmoozer about town. I was, worked well at the time.
It's a great way to justify all the time you spend in the bars too lmao
