I believe the original idea for the state of Washington was actually to call it Columbia, but people thought it would be too confusing what with Washington DC being the District of Columbia. Good thing they ironed that out, so much less confusing now.
Did anyone bother to inform them that they could’ve simply named it anything else and not picked between two names already taken by the nation’s capital?
