    i wonder what the effectiveness of a union in print media is. i feel like everything is an opinion column written by Picohitler McSmallbooj

      I mean I'd love a union for the newsroom I work in. Long hours, a lot of unpaid overtime, little editorial control and high turnover are all big issues.

      Like people here have a really warped view of the media industry, think whatever columnist they personally hate is representative of the entire field. Most reporters never get anywhere near an opinion column and even fewer have editorial input on a story after they've filed it. You write the thing then send it off because you've got two more on your quota for the day, and average pay is between like $13 - $25 per hour.

        Since you’re an actual journalist, I respect your position on this. I hadn’t considered the utility of the NYT striking for other publications unionization efforts. Critical support I guess.
