I work in bioinformatics applied to crop breeding/plant science.
i have a degree in physics and work in private sector machine vision/machine learning for ag. machine learning is the biggest meme, its just statistics that someone put a veneer on to trick people who dont understand math, cmv
yeah, i kinda lucked my way into my current position, all my knowledge that's useful for it came from undergrad QM. but if you know how large-dimensional linear spaces function and how to do things like change of bases, projection onto subspaces, etc. you can do most of ML, while largely avoiding a lot of the formalities of probability theory.
as for lucking into my way into my current position, we wanted to get into hyperspectral vision, and no one at the company was doing it, so as an intern i made some really crude python sklearn PLS implementations, that I guess worked well enough to start prototype testing. four years later I have an engineering title and i've moved my methods well beyond linear boundaries and have a ui program for training that I'm teaching people how to use now.
I want to present something along the lines of proposing that hyperspectral data should be thought of as an infinite dimensional hilbert space, but i work private sector and can't present my methods to anyone, including the rest of the company who don't really care what i do as long as it works. im probably already violating my nda posting this comment.
Great post though, and I agree with you that ML is just a huge meme within the private the sector.

Just defended my masters in biophysics - but my work mostly focuses on evolution and conservation applications.
Writing up my PhD, I work in molecular biology focused on a rare disease.
I'm also going to try and finish my Bs degree in Biochem and MolBio, and try to pursue the same path. What is your feeling about the field, tho?
It's fun, while I say I'm a molecular biologist I'm also a bit of a generalist as my project became quite broad medical applications (I want to say some more but because it's rare disease it's nearly impossible without making myself a very easy google search away). Working with a rare disease is great, if you can meet patients and advocates you have a connection that's great motivation.
I can't decide if I want to go through with a PhD, but I'm really interested in algae and its industrial applications. Is industrial biochem a thing?
Yep, biotech is a big field. Look into synthetic biology as a field as well. Depending on where you are a PhD is a big commitment.
I think algae is the future of CO2 capture and could be valuable in reestablishing manufacturing in the US. Luxury gay space Chlamydomonadales/Chroococcales.

That is very cool. Part of my postdoc was trying to attach doxorubicin molecules to a polymer backbone with the aim of mimicking the pharmacokinetics of liposomal doxorubicin at a fraction of the cost. It didn't really go anywhere unfortunately
hoping my thesis work out better haha. that sounds quite interesting though. We actually are using polymeric nanoparticles as a delivery vehicle for gene editing reagents.
From a psychological perspective, a lot of the same rules apply for both groups of people (generally, people tend to use energy in their households in similar ways for similar reasons; typically the energy source is what varies a lot at the household level). Though I know our systems engineers are hoping to build models that will work for more complex and urban settings and an end-goal!

Wild salmon! fuck salmon farming in all its forms, the net-pens in Washington and British Columbia have been absolute disasters for the environment in every way imaginable, but of course the aquaculture companies have successfully bought the relevant regulatory agencies so there's no question of shutting them down
Imagine what could we expect from our third world environment agencies. Yet at the same time we put money on research that concludes "you gotta shut down these farms right now".

I'm a technician working in routine medical testing. It's breathtaking how stingy the company is. I can't imagine how bad shit is in the USA where private health insurance also needs to be involved in every test that gets done.
Doing a master degree towards research in econometrics. (I'm not a researcher per se but I wanted to write ok). I'll start next year a PhD if I succeed well enough.
