X-Men '97 just ended an episode on this moment. It's pretty gnarly to still see animated depictions of famous moments/storylines from the comics, even if it is nostalgia pandering.

This image is burned into the last brick that was laid into the foundation of my comicnerditorium inside my mind palace.

Depending on the whims of the plot, Magneto can alter pretty much anything with electromagnetism if he needs to. Some times though, he is defeated simply by exploiting his inability to directly control nonferrous metal or nonmetal objects. At the same time, he can throw lightning bolts, create shields, lift nonmetal objects with just electromagnetic force, etc.

It could be handwaved away by one of those "mental block" explanations. Magneto can only do what he actually believes he can do with his ability, and not what he "should be able to do" at any given time. They say this about a few people after realizing they wrote themselves into a corner by making a particular character way too powerful for the setting

i mean dump enough raw energy into electromagnetic force and it can do some crazy shit. i remember reading about the magnetic force of a magnetar is strong enough to basically disintegrate a human. or at lower levels stretch individual atoms into cigar shapes.

        but yeah comic books vivian-shrug
