The magic system in this game is still the coolest ever put in an RPG

yeah idk that my computer can run it and didn't have the space to try regardless. it's fun, feels like a bigger Fable set in a more interesting world

also holy shit it's bad. I hadn't realized but jesus. like i remembered from playing it the first time that Bob Salvatore as writing director was pretty clear and painful, and I remember thinking the game was unnecessarily horny in its portrayal of women but maybe no worse than WoW, etc. but i also remember thinking at the time that Curt Schilling's (lol) deranged ideology wasn't be reflected in the game. Which may be more an indictment on the quality of available anglophone high fantasy content just a decade or so ago. But again holy shit.

          cw racism

the thieves guild are called Travelers and the first one you meet talks about their people like euros imagine roma people talk like ('don't leave anything not nailed down around me haha') are you fucking kidding me
if you play as a dark elf or whatever bob renamed them to, after you get the codec of whatever and the two guardian characters meet each other & the woman leaves, the dude basically says 'i don't trust black folks, besides the good ones like you of course'

Is this the one where you can beat the end boss by walking in a direction the devs didn't expect you to, or was that the second one?

all time Moments of Gaming. it's really great how you don't even beat the final boss, instead you goad the peasantry into joining together to clobber him into fine paste. possibly the first Maoist speedrun.

I remember doing this in the Xbox version purely by accident and wondering what the hell happened.

Basically that character is the final boss and towns people agro onto anything attacking you and kill him. The end of the game cutscene is just waiting in the flag for gandohar (that guy) being dead.

The games code is notoriously bad but its part of the charm.

I feel like more games would be improved by witnessing a posse of random townsfolk give the BBEG the boots until he's dead.

Anyone else agree that video game graphics stopped needing to get better around this time?

Far Cry 1 and Fear were the peak of video game graphics for me, didn't need anything more

I mostly just remember them talking about The Taint and then the way I broke the game by diving in one random dungeon and stunlocking all the demons inside, then eating all of their hearts, thus boosting my strength to the level where I one-shot everything

Very balanced and functional game, yessir, only the finest in Eurojank

Just learning about this jank ass game. Apparently there is Two Worlds (original), a better received Two Worlds II (original), and then a Two Worlds II HD ("engine upgrade").

What's the 411 on these games? Which should I play to experience a jank ass old Euro RPG?

Neither are worth playing if you don't have nostalgia for it.

I've always been fond of Two worlds 1 whereas 2 is a bit pants and visually is just nauseating to look at in every respect.

If you wanna give it a go you can pirate the gog versions of both games

You almost deterred me but I went ahead and gave the 1st game a shot. Sadly, I could not get past the splash load screen on Linux.

You need a hidden beta branch for it to work on linux the main install is borked. The above works on my steam deck.

Not sure if the gog version even has that release.

I ultimately got the Windows version to work with Wine anyway :) Just needed to install a few packages from Winetricks (for future reference if this somehow ever comes up for anyone: devenum quartz wmp9 xact)

Edit: hm well i guess i didn't get the FMV videos to work. not sure why on that one but whatever :)

fmv videos need to be replaced with the wmv versions. Whatever crazy codec they used doesn't even work on windows anymore. Not missing much there's like 3 cutscenes for the whole game.
