Vienna managed that by making it expensive for landlords to build and rent out stuff. So the state could sweep in and do build itself very cheap.

You know who did it? Socialist governments (or at least social democratic ones).

Meanwhile every dumbfuck lib and con is out there saying we should make conditions even more friendly for landlords by defacto-trickpe down economics and wondering why its not working or insisting that it is

Unlike the socialist govts that built housing, the US govt isn't going to build public housing whether private developers can build or not. California hasn't turned LA into Vienna by denying building permits

Would be cool if that changed. LA city council has been improving but I'm not that hopeful

In Switzerland they have a similar concept of self-managed community housing, but the conservatives and libs keep shutting down any attempts to expand it. Regardless, some of these communities have serious money to throw around and build large projects. Needless to say, it's extremely hard to get on a waiting list and once you are there, you have to wait a long time to get an apartment.

Several years ago, they had a referendum (a common occurrence here) to impose a mandatory 10% (IIRC) quota of community owned housing in every Swiss city. The opposition called it a "dictatorship!" and they threatened it would destroy the pension funds, which are investing heavily in properties. Pretty insidious scheme. Anyway, ultimately the motion failed, because libs, including my colleague WHO IS LIVING IN A COMMUNAL APARTMENT, voted against it...
