    In Switzerland they have a similar concept of self-managed community housing, but the conservatives and libs keep shutting down any attempts to expand it. Regardless, some of these communities have serious money to throw around and build large projects. Needless to say, it's extremely hard to get on a waiting list and once you are there, you have to wait a long time to get an apartment.

    Several years ago, they had a referendum (a common occurrence here) to impose a mandatory 10% (IIRC) quota of community owned housing in every Swiss city. The opposition called it a "dictatorship!" and they threatened it would destroy the pension funds, which are investing heavily in properties. Pretty insidious scheme. Anyway, ultimately the motion failed, because libs, including my colleague WHO IS LIVING IN A COMMUNAL APARTMENT, voted against it...
