        In the USA, American means from the USA. In South America, American means from North or South America.

          And what languages are most South Americans native speakers of?

          And what about the rest of the Anglo world? In English America means the US. Someone from South America can't be speaking to a native English speaker in English and expect them to interpret it as the continents.

          In Spanish and Portuguese América means both continents, and that's fine. But the meaning on based in language.
