Germany not only requires approval by a judge, but two independent psychiatric exams that are frequently super invasive and full of transmed shit (literally anything else in our legal system where expert testimony is required only asks for one exam). The libs and greens agreed to change this recently, then the libs got cold feet and discovered they want to validate every terf delusion about trans people and now there's been an unending tug-off war that has resulted in a bunch of new forms of discrimination being smeared all over our new self ID law all while i'm waiting for that law to pass so i can get my name changed without having to pay 2000 € out of pocket to get my human rights violated.

And i'm still glad i 'm not in OP's shoes, no matter how many nerves that shitshow has cost me it can't be worse than living in small town florida as a trans woman.

jesus christ girl that's awful. the bureaucracy here is bad and the laws we've got incoming are gonna make life a nightmare but that sounds like total fucking hell.

is all of that seriously just for the fucking name change??

Yes, just for the name and gender entry change on my birth certificate. Up until 2012, bottom surgery was also a requirement. Getting gender affirming care is easier, but it still took me nine months on waiting lists to go on HRT, and i know people from more rural areas who have been waiting for over a year and get gatekept by their endo with stuff like "you're too old and too overweight for this".
