      in game your characters are mercenaries hired by mega corporations fighting over the post apocalyptic Earth, so yeah

        So kinda yes, kinda no.

        AC1 with the revelations of Master of Arena, it's actually that every level of life if you know about it or not is essentially controlled by a central AI that was made before humanity was forced into underground habitats by a "Great Destruction" (Think Fallout vaults, but much much bigger). And this AI pretty much orchestrates all this fighting because it fundamentally thinks that it'll make humanity stronger and/or keep them from doing another Great Destruction to themselves. And the kicker is nobody even know about this AI until the player becomes too powerful/successful, and then this AI decides that the PC needs to go which ends up bringing about the end of this AI.

        With the destruction of this AI, this leads into AC2 which has a government form and it's actually pretty effective at keeping the corpos and Ravens (what you are in these games) in line well enough to keep another Great Destruction from happening again.

        And then 3rd gen starts (AC3-LR) as a soft reboot and is a lot more grim version of AC1.
