Later on in my conversation with them they support Starmer and call Blair's New Labour "leftist". Claiming I am just factionalist and that it's factionalism to not call the neoliberal fuckbags left wing when they are blatantly centre right.

They're aussie aus-delenda-est

EDIT: Turns out I mistook the neoliberal responding to me about Blair later on for the same person when they are in fact different people.

EDITEDIT: The mods at lemmy.world removed comments when a guy called me antisemitic for being anti-zionist. I could learn to like them.

It's funny, because part of why I dislike left-anticommunists is because I think they are going to get leftists killed, most likely by directly snitching them out to whatever our equivalent of the Freikorps turns out to be, in the hopes of distancing themselves when capitalists start throwing us all in the same camps for extermination.

"This was another very difficult question I had to ask my interview subjects, especially the leftists from Southeast Asia and Latin America. When we would get to discussing the old debates between peaceful and armed revolution; between hardline Marxism and democratic socialism, I would ask: “Who was right?”

In Guatemala, was it Árbenz or Che who had the right approach? Or in Indonesia, when Mao warned Aidit that the PKI should arm themselves, and they did not? In Chile, was it the young revolutionaries in the MIR who were right in those college debates, or the more disciplined, moderate Chilean Communist Party?

Most of the people I spoke with who were politically involved back then believed fervently in a nonviolent approach, in gradual, peaceful, democratic change. They often had no love for the systems set up by people like Mao. But they knew that their side had lost the debate, because so many of their friends were dead. They often admitted, without hesitation or pleasure, that the hardliners had been right. Aidit’s unarmed party didn’t survive. Allende’s democratic socialism was not allowed, regardless of the détente between the Soviets and Washington.

Looking at it this way, the major losers of the twentieth century were those who believed too sincerely in the existence of a liberal international order, those who trusted too much in democracy, or too much in what the United States said it supported, rather than what it really supported -- what the rich countries said, rather than what they did.

That group was annihilated." - Vincent Bevins, The Jakarta Method

It was a genuine tragedy the first time, but it's only going to be obnoxious if it happens again purely because some fucking dumbasses actively refused to learn about the history of socialist projects and acted like book recommendations were the equivalent of telling them to eat out their own mothers.

    Not leftists, Stalinists;

If you hear someone say something like this, they are a liberal. Leftists would know that while leftism comes in very strong and different flavors, at the end of the day the destruction of capital is their primary goal.

Furthermore there's no coherent ideology you could encapsulate as distinct within Stalin's policies or theory. There's no Stalinism. The guy was like Lenin's biggest acolyte. Everything Stalin did was informed by what he thought Lenin would have wanted.

I do have a lemmy account but I have a very hard time figuring out how to actually comment from a link to an instance I don't have an account on. I've done it before by going to the link, figuring out what instance and comm the post is in, and then navigating there from my instance, but there is a better way right?

I told Dessalines and Nutomic that this needs to be a native feature of Lemmy like over a year ago it's super obviously a sticking point that's really fiddly. Should just be a "view this from x instance" button, drop down list of instances. That or a home instance setting that makes the button always be set to your home. This way you can go to any lemmy site and the "view from my instance" button is on all posts there, allowing you to browse their setup but view it from your instance in a single click from any thread.

I had no idea Lemmy was started by Chapo posters, I thought it was just Hexbear. The specter of r/chapotraphouse haunts reddit to this day lmao.

janet-wink I am fairly confident that they had a presence in certain more radical spinoffs that were also banned alongside CTH.

But yes, reddit literally fucked themselves. There would be no reddit alternatives right now if they had not purged leftist communities.

We're not about to have an arm wrestling contest about whether to press the tankie button or the anarchist button. Anarchist tendencies and state communist tendencies both depend on material conditions and it will be years of unprecedented successes before the differences matter meaningfully. Is an anarchist going to object when the tankie brings organization tactics back from the military? Probably not. Is the tankie going to be upset when the anarchist steals from the Walmart? Probably not. Can both of these moves contribute to the same project? You bet your fuckin ass they can.

To say that the anarchist is perpetually in danger of getting Among Us'd is sophomoric in its understanding of how a project is built, the challenges therein, and pure doomer about a project being dooooomed from the get go.

On this note, WTF do I do about a personal friend (former Bernard Brother, as I am as well) who keeps trying to bring up "China Bad" in personal/unrelated convos thinking that I'm going to agree with them about it?

Nono I got it. Just wanted to say that anyway. Haven't actually seen someone talk about Kropotkin specifically though, usually more vaguely "the anarchists" being betrayed.

They either talk in vague terms about Spain or in even vaguer terms about the USSR because in the latter case the anarchists (really "the anarchist factions that they are bringing up") are the ones who immediately attempted to destroy the USSR and were put down in response. Some brave souls go as far as praising Makhno, but I think most have learned not to do this because all someone needs to do is say "Makhnovists committed pogroms" and the whole attack becomes a shitshow.
