The site counting all open tabs as online members is a pretty bad way of figuring out how many people are here.
I don't know about you all, but I constantly have around 10 chapo chat tabs open, especially when I first open the site to catch up on links.
The people confused about activity because of the hyper inflated "online" numbers with the dead slow posting rate are confused because we're reporting at least 5x the actual users online at any point.
We don't have 1700 people online, we have 300 with a few tabs open each.
The Video:
I opened around 150 tabs of Chapo.chat to test this after someone mentioned it to see if the site really did count users this way, then closed them all and watched the 1900 users drop to 1700. (Did this twice, recorded once.)
Also, petition for some kind of traffic page where we can see graphs of Chapo.chat activity over time?
I'd like to start doing outreach on Reddit and seeing actual metrics for it would be very motivating.
This sounds like a very important and necessary thing to divert the devs attention to instead of just continuing to plod on with the work based on a priorities list.
No shut up I have 1700 friends and they all look at my shitposts and laugh even though they don’t upvote ;_;
Until about 10/4 "User's Online" was counting Unique IPs. at that point we merged a refactoring commit from upstream that silently clobbered my patch. The fix is building now and should be out in an hour or two. Long story short we probably have about 900 users because the trend lines only really jumped about 80-100%
I believe it was the 6th/7th depending on your timezone. Not that this is important but for the sake of anyone curious reading the thread that wants the exact date.
the frontpage number is indeed the total number of open websocket connections on the server.
rather than altering that wording, the proper fix for this is the websocket connection being shared across tabs. i'd be way grateful if someone volunteered time to work on this; i don't have the time to learn to fix it atm.
IMO instead of tabs open it should just say feral hogs
or to chapochatify it, feral hexabears
So even if the counter is broken (which is 100% is I just verified) we can still use it as a metric for growth considering we were at 800 people or tabs just last week. Hopefully this gets fixed eventually. I find it especially lame that cached pages count toward the total cuz I know my phone has about 100 cached pages on it (most arent chapo since I use a separate browser but whatevs)
I'm referring to the sitewide number, as the screen recording shows.
it's context based. so the frontpage is the total connection count. within a post, number of connections currently in that "room". same idea with community.
you shamed me into closing about 350 tabs since reading this.
Most were idle/inactive, and only about 10-20% were chapo.chat, so I didn't notice the counter change when I did this.
edit: now it dropped from like 1700 to 700 lol. Interesting.
It shows users on that specific page, I meant ~700 on the home page.
I've been informed that the fix is live. apparently you peeps all open 2.3 tabs. I'm not sure HOW you open that 0.3 of a tab, but you do.
or and here me out : log off in your heart and focus the things you care about else where :)
