Also, PR should be fucking decolonized, not further subsumed into its oppressor nation

Puerto Ricans disagree with you, it seems. Independence was the other option on this ballot.

People not voting for the option that will get them invaded and bombed to shit for 20 years? Curious

I mean it wouldn't get them bombed. They would just become a US satellite state, like the Pacific territories that seceded peacefully. But there are significant material benefits to becoming a state, like welfare and better aid in the case of another hurricane. Seceding would also possibly cost them the right to immigrate to the US.

Wasn’t the US response to the last hurricane famously inept? I mean, I get it. It might seem like a materially better choice to people there than going it alone, that’s just another expression of colonisation though, being dependant on the oppressor nation. It’s part of the system of control.

It’ll be interesting to see how this shakes out. The dems could certainly use another two senate seats (which they’ve always assumed they’d get if this happened).

Yes, and that's the reason why opinion shifted in favor of statehood. If they were a state, then they would probably get a better response, since among other things politicians would have to care about them.

No such thing as true decolonization under global capitalism. If it's not directly ruled by the US, it will be indirectly ruled by the US via the IMF.

PR becoming a state would not be a permanent relationship for eternity. If there is a socialist revolution, PR would obviously have a right to it's autonomy.

The PR independence movement is effectively dead among working class puerto ricans. It's basically a position just held by the intelligentsia

It's significant, since the actual people of Puerto Rico have never voted for statehood before, and thus congress admitting them has been a moot point until now.
