I've been using this talking point in conversation, followed by supporting information, with good results. Good faith people are dumbfounded.
Sadly, people have no concept of the most basic history.
Forget a critical analysis of why things happened. People don't even have a string of historical events to form a worldview with. The defunding of education over generations is deliberate.
Keep thinking about the P man's leak during the 2016 campaign:

I followed those leaks closely at the time and that quote stood out to me. My recollection was that he actually wrote that, not that it was sent to him in an email. My mistake.
I think the point stands though. There has been a co-ordinated decades long campaign, involving both parties and the elite, to demean government, drop civics and in general conspire to produce an unaware and compliant citizenry.
The private schools for the elite still teach Latin, Greek history, the classics and the humanities of course.
A century ago education was everything. Now they understand it leads to communism.
