Its a good thing that the Democrats nominee will fight to protect SS, and has a long history that they can point to, to demonstrate their commitment to it.

I do see Biden as the better option here if its a binary choice.

Trumps base will follow him into the depths of hell, if the left keeps pressure on Biden the Dem base is definitely against cutting social programs.... so it would not be such an easy task.

I don't see him as being able to sell some kind of "grand bargain" either like Obama was able to..

What sort of pressure would the Vote Blue No Matter Who crowd exert on a one term president who is unlikely to live long enough to finish it, and how would such pressure manifest? Reminder that Obama offered Social Security cuts as part of one of those dumbshit grand bargains and Biden is considerably to his right. I would bet, well, the entire Social Security Trust Fund that Biden is going to agree to Bush's 2007 privatization scheme and the Blue MAGA crowd will go along with it because the alternative is this shit from Trump.

I'm not american, so correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't social security the thing that supports old people? So he's just alienated the only group that consistently votes

I was still kind of assuming he'd manage a win somehow, but does this not completely fuck him?

Oh boy, that explanation would take a long time. America is a shitty country, is the short answer.

His elderly supporters are all wealthy and self-sufficient, so it doesn't matter to them at all.

The cool thing about America is that, like everything else, access to the years between 55 and death is determined by how much money you have

The older you go, the less poor people there are of that age

I think his idea is that his supporters don't make the connection between the payroll tax and the social security and Medicare benefits they pay for. And they would probably find a way to phase out the benefits so people don't notice it until 2025.
