  • Aside from the China Bad angle, the trend of drawing children's media as super fucked up (because lol so irreverent, I guess) bothers me. It showcases either a reality where a lot of us did not have protection from adult neurosis/stress in childhood or a lack of respect for trying to give that to current children. Probably both.

  • You're trying to find some sort of justice but we have to accept this is an unjust society. He's already been granted bail he can afford unlike the people in my neighborhood when they sell some dope or whatever.

I don't like the whole "rich white guy is gonna have a hard time in prison!" thing. Poor, disabled people have a hard time in prison. Pregnant black women have a hard time in prison. Trans people have a hard time in prison. Like all things, resources + power helps, it doesn't hurt.

  • This beauty youtuber I watch sometimes posted a review of this movie The Buttercream Gang. It’s like a family Christian movie where a group of good kids deals with one of them coming back from Chicago having been corrupted by gang life. Here’s the YouTube vid about it: https://youtu.be/Qn7_ktHcsEY

This completely discounts that not voting/voting 3rd party is a political decision with its own set of (incredibly minute, as with voting) consequences and implications. Let's acknowledge that one's vote has no consequence in the outcome of an election and the actual, small influence is in amplifying or invalidating different political messages, movements, and ideals.

So, yes, you're going to L.A. or Chicago no matter what. Your vote has no bearing on this. You can decide to do a selfie that says "Well this sucks, but Chicago is better than L.A. C'mon guys let's work and try for Chicago," or you can post a selfie where you've written FUCK THIS on your forehead and encourage people not to validate this kidnap-and-bus process with participation.

  • You might be thinking of The Satanic Temple and other modern start ups that are basically humanitarian agnostics but do the Satanic aesthetic to be like "You say a nativity scene is fine, okay, then a Bathumet statue has to be fine" or apply to do the rotating opening prayer for school board meetings and do a little devil chant or w/e. The vast majority don't believe in the existence of Satan: supernatural evil being.

They're pretty good, if you're the type of person to look at society and the thing you wanna put the most effort into fixing is Christianity being all up in the state.

I think they do some abortion rights stuff though which is cool.

  • There are better ways to reconcile your imperial core guilt with your leftism. One that doesn't involve genociding the descendents of people we kidnapped and enslaved, the descendents of people we killed and stole lands from, the recent immigrants who are being hunted in our country after our actions decimated theirs...on and on.

What a way to top all the violence and exploitation with one last big kill because young white leftist says Amerikkka sux!

  • Earlier you said "it's not my responsibility" to talk to this mod who is trans and working hard to make things better about how to do that

Now you're saying it's this mods responsibility to go on Discord, which she mentioned repeatedly she doesn't use because it often induces dysphoria, and if she doesn't it means she doesn't really care about building a good space for trans and nonbinary people*

Hopefully you see that on a person to person level that's pretty mean.

It seems like you're saying you and your group are happy to stay on the discord and don't really care either way about being on Lemmy. I'm not sure if that's accurate but it's my impression.

  • Great post. Most people like getting things done when it can be an outlet for socialization and they're not being micromanaged. So many come home from official "work" and voluntarily go do more work - church bake sales, coaching youth sports, helping people in their cycling group fix their bikes. And more people want to do those things but can't because official "work" drains them so completely.

It's such a stupid take that people would all sit at home if we eliminated capitalism. Evidence to the contrary is everywhere.

  • Being a doctor, when compared with other super 'professional' jobs, is very difficult work with a hard path getting there. Why do people want to be doctors, then? What's the 'perk' that makes up for the (again, relatively) poor easiness-to-pay ratio? Why not be an engineer? The perk is that it is important, good, and cool and it's viewed that way by our society.

Since doctors are paid well, people have no trouble properly assessing their value. Compared with a home health care worker taking care of the elderly for $10 an hour, which is viewed much more poorly.

Or think about how otherwise apolitical people sign up for the military for the validation and veneration. That's an unhealthy instance, but I don't have much doubt that once you remove the classism that clouds people's perception by removing wage inequality, the cool, good, hard, unpopular jobs will be highly valued by society. And that is incredibly important to people!

I'm not against perks that stem from the situation either... your family getting to see exhibits at the museum you clean before the general public, for instance. But too many external, abstract perks will lead to the same classist mis-evaluations. It's such a powerful thing - we currently value social media marketing experts over utility workers, lol

  • You keep saying it's common sense but if you've ever been a mod before you know that saying "Mods just will use their common sense, no worries" leads to chaos as people feel mods have favorites that they let slide and then pariahs they are strict with.

And it's not even "common sense." I am very sympathetic to ML ideology, and if mods banned an anarchist for calling a ML a "fucking social fascist" I would be very surprised and disappointed by that. I agree with @darkcalling that insults about appearance or any bigotry is unacceptable, but fiery political debate is acceptable.

Anyway, I get that the rules are copied and pasted for now, and they will get tweaked later, and everyone who built this has had a lot on their plate. I'm totally cool with that and not getting answers right this second. But it's kind of like "Be patient" -- "Oh, okay." -- "It's really just common sense anyway." -- "Oh...okay..."

I have no idea what you're talking about but this sounds unhinged as hell

Some people don't want to see the discord drama migrate here immediately as the culture of this place is first developing. It's not a slight against you. It's a desire to move forward.
