What most people think of (dirt bikers riding around countryside being loud and ripping up public paths) isn't a major problem for most people. It will probably get support from rural or retired folks who don't have anything else to complain about (i.e. Tory voters). What is an increasing problem is the rise of twist and go "e bikes" that are essentially motorbikes. These are becoming a problem in city centres and pedestrianised zones where they're not allowed. You also see a lot of teenagers riding them on roads at night, all black clothes, no lights, no helmets. Bit of a nuisance and if you asked the average person in UK I bet they'd have a negative attitude towards it. Maybe this is what Labour are trying to capitalise on? If you ask me we should be making them bike lanes and embracing it but whatever.
My friends were the opposite, they accepted that Z is pronounced Zed, but they said that gen zee was different, because "it's like ZZ Top". I argued back that it's not like ZZ Top, it's just a letter assigned to a generation. They were so used to hearing it said by Americans on TikTok, they refused to even accept that a normal person would say gen zed. "It's just gen zee though! Nobody says gen zed!". I'm angry again thinking about it!
I said "gen zed" the other day and everybody frowned and said "Don't you mean gen zee?". NO I FUCKING DON'T. Still fighting the good fight in pronouncing schedule with a soft sh but I think I'm in a small minority these days. I've given up trying to call it an aubergine emoji, we may as well accept it's an eggplant now 🍆
I was in Malaysia once and a got chatting to a guy who didn't have the best English. He asked me for another way to say "I'm only joking" and I taught him to say "I'm only having a giraffe", which he managed in broken English ("Having a jee raff") I hope one day he says that to an Englishman and confuses him thoroughly.
I was on board with switching to a system that made sense, but their argument won me over. It's very british and it would never happen in a boring country like Germany!
I think there are too many communities. People tried to replicate reddit's diversity and places got spread too thin. When Reddit first started it didn't even have subreddits.
Realistic advice, I like it. Makes me think of the ridiculous sort of advice you see on Reddit that nobody would ever say. "John, I respect you as a friend but your attitude towards women is misogynistic and unacceptable. I know you are better than this and you can improve your behaviour". Fucking nerds roleplaying on the internet.
I had a friend who kept saying f****t. I don't think he had anything against gays, he just carried on with the early 2000s usage of the word. I would say "Oi! No F bombs!" And he'd apologise. After a couple I'd just say "oi". It worked eventually, no need for a big intervention or a serious sitdown. Just "Oi".
