  • Totally agree with that last statement as someone working in that industry. Would be nice to not only see public labs gain stable funding, but to see publicly-owned infrastructure for bringing treatments from the lab scale to full production too. For medications at least, this would mean we could get rid of the private sector (or at least provide an alternative option) that didn't inflate the costs of treatments and constantly seek IP that kills treatments that are potentially more effective and/or incredibly cheap to produce and provide to those in need.

The private sector provides a necessary service currently, but only because they have ensured that they have a monopoly. Ultimately, they serve as leeches holding the advancement of medical science back.

  • Suggestions I didn't think of before:

I'm really bad about mistyping or misspelling words (particularly via touch screen). Could you implement something where the search function helps direct users to the likely result they are searching for in the case of common typos or phrases that are commonly used for the topic, but don't match the article name?

Idk if you log search queries now or not, but these may help show what topics users are looking for that don't currently have pages.

Another suggestion, add a function that allows users to submit questions about the topic that weren't answered by the page. If you end up using the talk function for pages, I guess this could cover this idea.

Overall, I greatly appreciate the work all of you have put into the site, it's a wonderful resource that I use regularly!

  • Besides Lemmy, I'm the same. I don't think there's anything wrong with your approach, it doesn't sound condescending to me, but you also don't need to justify why you don't have social media unless you want to (if you are). It mostly sounds like you're overthinking things to me.

"I only have text" or "I don't use social media, but here's how you can get ahold of me" "I don't have Instagram, but I can give you my number" are what I would say. Keep it simple and offer an alternative form of contact.

If they ask you why you don't use social media, then you can explain if you want, but unless they probe you for more, I'd keep it simple. Why don't you use social media? "I'm a privacy advocate." "I don't like it." "It's just not my thing/not for me." "I'm happier without it."
