Russia was the largest of the member states of the Soviet Union. That does not mean anyone else was "less Soviet". Russia is in many ways the successor to the Soviet Union, but that does not mean "Russia" defeated the Nazis. They were the largest contributor, but Ukrainians, Byelorussians, Dagestani, etc. all played their part and suffered.

In the context of the Soviet Union, ethnic Russians were felt to receive preferential treatment over other ethnic groups, and even moreso now there is a tendency for Russia to view the Soviet victory in the Great Patriotic War as a uniquely Russian victory, which elides the great suffering and contributions of particularly Byelorussia and Ukraine, who got fought over at least twice, with some specific places being fought over many more times. They provided front line troops as well as partisans, and also suffered the reprisals that came with any resistance.

Weird, I don't recall the USSR announcing they'd fight back the Nazis using only ethnic Russians.

However, this stunning revelation you've had really changes our understanding of history, and will no doubt revolutionize the historical journals.

Look, hardheaded and clear-eyed materialist analysis says that if you can find 1000 fascists in any nation, then you can bomb civilians to your heart's content and Western leftists will cheer you on.

This is definitely normal and not at all a sign that Western leftists continue their long streak of having baby 🧠 regarding international politics.

  • I feel you on the self crit, because I had the same mistaken belief about this that I did about the US invading Iraq: that it was too stupid and self-defeating to actually happen, and therefore there was just sabre rattling to force concessions.

I really need to work on that - feels like I'm big braining myself into homo internationalus theory (as opposed to homo economicus).
