I got the same vibe from the movie but my lib parents praised it for "not being too political" so I think like you said you have to already see the oppression of American courts to see it as a harsh critique of the system

I haven't had much luck getting daiya cheese to melt but I also have only used it like a topping (not in sauces)
I'd recommend daiya cheese if cheese is holding you back. It's a little more expensive than dairy cheese and obviously doesn't taste the exact same but after trying a few kinds and getting used to non-dairy products I like it. Also Miyoko's mozz is great for pizza
Stop paying for the exploitation of animals maybe?
Obviously your practice of eating eggs from your chickens is ethically way better than eating eggs from an industrial farm. At the same time, it is a bit exploitative to take and eat your chickens egg, which simply is not produced for human consumption. Think of how people adopt dogs without any expectation of the dog providing anything in return, why should your relationship with a chicken be any different? Not a chicken expert, but I've heard from others that allowing your chickens to eat the eggs (and shells as well) is good for them because it replenishes some of what they lost producing the egg (especially calcium).
In any sector of the meat industry, animals that want to live will be forcibly killed. Obviously it is preferable for animals not to spend their entire lives in agony, but vegans reject any commodification or exploitation of animals, regardless of their living conditions. A similar situation (in my opinion) to this would be the following: There's an innocent person in front of you and you are given 3 options: -Take the person as prisoner, torture them for 2 weeks, then kill them. -Take the person as prisoner, provide them with decent living conditions for 2 weeks, then kill them. -Leave the person alone. It's a pretty obvious choice, isn't it? Now change "person" to cow/chicken/pig/fish and make "2 weeks" their lifetime. Sure, the 2nd option causes less suffering than the 1st, but the 3rd option is the only way you avoid deliberately causing a sentient being to suffer.
