I haven't visited mainland China yet, but the Hong Kong and Tokyo metros were excellent! Tokyo has a weird system of several private companies running their own lines, but I had zero trouble getting around (even at morning rush hour).

The real dirty secret of the Tokyo metro system is that the lines are pretty tolerable during rush hour if you're inside the Yamanote loop line. The real hell is the commuter lines coming from Saitama, Yokohama, Chiba, or Western Tokyo during rush hour. Those trains are absolute sardine cans.

The Moscow Metro is pretty dope too, even if only for the rad murals of Lenin and Stalin.

It's also crazy that you don't even have to be that old to remember a time when the Shanghai Metro was only 2 lines. The third line only opened up in 2000, meaning it went from "meh" to world class in only 20 years.
