Yeah, keep your client running on a computer with your VPN running. You can also use a spare machine you have and dedicate it to that purpose which is what some people do.
Some people I know just leave their computers on at night with the VPN and torrent client running. Unless you're downloading a ton of stuff this is probably enough to get you at least a 1:1 ration if not 1:1.5
I got the impression PIA was filtering uploads, but I haven't had that happen with Nord yet (however, they might drop the connection if you leave it running long enough for cease and desist letters to get sent to the VPN service. I think this happened to me the other day)
IMO, a general purpose VPS is a lot more useful than a seedbox (to do everything but seeding, obviously).
A lot of people recommending PIA. I must recommend against that on the grounds they were acquired by a shady company that I believe is/was involved in marketing (red flag).
Once upon a time they were one of the few companies tested in court and shown to not have logs. But their ownership has changed hands and not for the better. To be honest their original holding company name (and maybe current) of "London Trust Media" screamed GCHQ to me. Which fine, you know a lot of VPNs that claim zero log are IMO likely shell company fronts for various western intelligence organs and they don't really care that much about you pirating shit, certainly not enough to blow their operations when they're really interested in catching people handing over secrets, dissidents, etc and just using pirates to pay the bills. It's just I wouldn't even trust PIA that far anymore because I think there is a good chance now they could be in the business of spying on your traffic and selling profiles of you and your real IP address to marketing companies.
Seedbox hosts are fairly easy to find just by searching. You can try using a non-seedbox provider like linode but truth is if they get a DMCA they're dropping you like molten lead and they really don't give a shit about protecting you (as seedboxes are not a primary business for them and are unwanted in fact) so would probably even pass on your info if asked. I would go for providers outside of the US where possible due to stricter copyright enforcement schemes in the US. Evaluate their costs and plans and your needs as far as how much disk space, how much bandwidth you need on a monthly basis.
As to VPNs, the privacytools list is alright https://www.privacytools.io/providers/vpn/ I'll also mention AirVPN, they have sales fairly frequently (check on black friday/cyber monday as well as Christmas) and may be cheaper than the other listed providers if you get them with a sale and as far as torrenting goes they're fine with it. They have a kill-switch client, lots of servers, etc.
If you do use a VPN instead of a seedbox, I would recommend using qBittorrent client and opening advanced options then setting the network interface to the VPN interface to really prevent leaks.
I just started using Mozilla VPN because basically every free VPN has been revealed to be stealing data and keeping logs.
