"for too long, the wealthiest Americans and big corporations have been able to use lawyers, accountants, and lobbyists to avoid paying their fair share"
Yeah, ok good, but I'd would much rather see them repeal Trump's tax cut. This whole bit about them "paying their fair share" obfuscates the fact that their "fair share" is unbelievably paltry anyway.
steals $10
"Hey! Give back my $8!"
"It was only $5"
"I want my $3 back"
"Okay, here's 50¢"
"Thanks for returning my quarter!"
I love that the US government applies this math consistently. Student debt forgiveness, stimulus checks, taxes...
:angery:
at the risk of poking a beehive, this isn't a terrible idea. The IRS, especially for auditing the highest income bracket, has been (intentionally) underfunded since at least Bush 2, and realistically since Reagan. It's a textbook Warren solution that doesn't remotely get to the heart of income inequality...but it's not like, bad to get more auditors for the wealthiest Americans and corporations.
It is a good action within the context of the existing system. Much like welfare programs it's an area where you get a greater return than expenditure. Not the best way of thinking about it but fuck it, I'd take anything at this point
The IRS has been systematically been defunded by Republicans, but it has also been weaponized against people trying to obtain basic benefits that the government ostensibly provides.
If we were taking this money from somewhere else that was causing more harm - say, diverting $10B from the F-35 program or retraining all ICE Agents into corporate auditors - I might be at least curious enough to tune in. But you'd be crazy to think that simply throwing some of the Infinite Money Bucket cash at the IRS under Biden will do anyone on the Left any favors when President Tom Cotton is picking new cabinet positions.
As it becomes increasingly obvious that money isn't real, and as tax evasion schemes grow more elaborate and opaque over time, I'm beginning to question the point of income taxation as a mechanism of a bourgeoise state. One of the few nice-ish things Republicans have done since Bush Jr has been to increase refundable tax credits and standard deduction tax rates. If that's the direction the country wants to go, I say lets go for it.
Let's up that standard deduction to a cool $50k.
Let's eliminate the payroll tax.
Let's triple the child tax credit.
Let's scrub the IRS, so low-income folks putting in claims aren't endlessly hassled by bureaucrats in DC. And while we're at it, we'll undermine the value of T-Bills and drastically drive up interest rates on folks with good credit. Maybe even put a big hole into the value of the dollar globally and cripple international finance capital in the process.
Quit trying to tax the rich and just dump that money out to the lower classes as quickly as possible.
Bring on the Weimer Republic and wheelbarrows full of cash. Devalue the dollar and bring instant debt relief to the nation, while undermining all that cash being horded abroad. Fuck capitalists in a manner even your most die-hard yellow-dog Republican will love.
So what this really means is the IRS will go after the poor and lower middle classes unpaid taxes so it looks like they're doing something while the rest of the extra funds get laundered to the rich lobby fucks who paid warren prolly like 50k to push for this theater bill.
Biden couldn't even do $10k in student debt relief.
None of this shit is passing, so it's all academic anyway. Warren is once again spouting Plans without any kind of plan to get shit done.
Warren: I'm proposing legislation that will never be passed
Squidward: How daring
Warren's bill would provide the IRS with $31.5 billion in mandatory annual funding instead of leaving most of the agency's yearly budget up to the discretion of lawmakers who have frequently opted to cut it in recent years, resulting in far fewer audits of the rich.
HAHAH... Just cut a check for a handful of million bucks to everybody who's in the USA...
