I'd prefer the old clunky consoles full of knobs and switches because they're analogue and more trustworthy. I'm sure there's things you can do quickly by flipping a switch or pressing a button that has more safety and speed then clicking on the gear, going into user settings, control panel, oxygen and life support systems, system restore. FLIP THE SWITCH QUICKLY WE'RE DYING!!

The worst part about touch screen control panels, and one that will probably get me killed if I ever get a new car with them, is that you need to look at them to make sure you hit the right controls.
One thing I'm thinking about, is these systems are far more complex than their grandpas were, the amount of individual switches and wiring would be insane to manage every system with cool tactile autism busy boxes that people like me love to play with.
I hhaaatte touch screens but they're saving possibly hundreds of pounds in wiring and interface components. A spare touch screen module in a space spec vehicle can probably be replaced fairly quick.
I feel like the part in the expanse where Epstein kills himself (lol) accidentally by failing to reach the touchscreen while under heavy Gs kind of demonstrated one reason why touchscreen flight controls might be a bad idea

The highest likely hood for failures on space suits are the points of contact on them, this means the feet (walking), the hands (manipulation), the head (cause you have different size than without helmet) and the rest that could stick to things. This means it is good to easily see if there are leaks on your hand and feet - which black boots and gloves make hard to see unless they have a paste in them.
Furthermore it is good to have a bright, but not too bright surface area on your hands so you can differentiate between the modules and screws you got (which might be harder with black gloves). I will stop here, but form follows function is not always bad.

I read the post, and while the suits probably should be more sturdy than they appear to be, taking the controls away from non-qualified people is probably for the best. You don't want some millionaire failson trying to play kerbal space program in flight. With the Dragon Capsule alone, the decision to remove virtually any form of manual control and to have all of your inputs be done via touchscreen is just…not smart. At all.

For comparison, the LES and ACES [astronaut] suits all include some form of limited life support in the event that your mode of transportation has a critical failure while also being pressure suits or at the very least partial-pressure suits and carry multiple survival aspects such as parachutes, inflatable life rafts, and other tools to help an astronaut survive and be recovered from emergency landing sites that will usually be in the wilderness. The SpaceX suits, well, we don’t KNOW what’s in the suit because Musky boy won’t tell us. It’s privatized, what do you expect, they care more about keeping their tech to themselves than safety or transparency. It’s claimed to survive a “vacuum chamber” just fine but no actual test results have been shown.

I only take issue with the very last sentence about touchscreens. Touchscreens are cool and good actualy mr boomer. It is a trend in aviation for for the past two decades now, look at the A350 compared to the A320 interface with the Flight Management System(FMS) is done through a mouse and keyboard only and it looks great.
The only reason the evolution isn't faster is because the vast majority of pilots and a significant part of them being boomers need to be retrained to the next model and there is a compromise that needs to be made between difficulty/length of retraining vs the necessary engineering requirements of the new model. That is why Boeing cockpits tend to carry over elements from the 70s or 80s not because it is inherently good practice or anything.
The touchscreens controls AFAIK have been tested by real astronauts a lot to make sure they can actually fly manualy and can do any emergency procedure because it is actually meant to be used by NASA as well for real useful things and not just publicity stunts.
The thing with SpaceX is that there is a clear divide when it comes to things designed and tested by real engineers and pilots/astronauts and flashy irrelevant childish shit like making them wear "marvel spacesuit" with Apple watches lol.
Touch screens lack precision and will be harder to operate than toggles or levers in different levels of gravity, while in motion, or in an emergency scenario. I'm on my phone constantly and still manage to fat-finger things all the time, especially in the winter when the capacitive touch doesn't work as well with cold hands or when I'm wearing gloves (even ones that account for it), and even when my hands are sweaty or otherwise damp.
They have more potential points of failure than a mechanical interface - what happens if the screen cracks and you can't get to the buttons on the right half? What if the software fails and the whole touch screen crashes and needs to be rebooted during a critical moment?
If there are physical overrides then it's gimmicky and dumb but fine I guess but then you need to learn how to use both anyway so there's no point.
