I watched a bit of it, and I'm pretty sure these are fairly normal martial arts things (at least, they're fairly similar to martial arts videos I've seen before). I don't think it's a very effective show of force, but I doubt people would find it sinister if it was the Japanese or South Korean army.

I'm pretty sure these are all props made to break for what's essentially a magic show to make the army look cool. It's a little weird, but I really don't think it says much.
He's slouching a bit in a chair during a military exercise. It's poor form, sure, but I think calling this "fulfilling painful and possibly dangerous acts for the amusement of a slouched Kim Yong Un" is a bit of a stretch. You could just as well call it "Kim Jong Un bored during military martial arts demonstration".

Martial arts are still big as spectacle and entertainment in lots of Asian countries. Think shoalin monks. None of what they’re using is real, it’s props that are meant to break for the show. European militaries have rifle and marching shows, Asian militaries have this. :shrug-outta-hecks:

I think he just finds it goofy, but the army guys love it because it's something fun to train for. Like this shit it exactly why tons of kids get hype about pro wrestling, it's all well rehearsed "feats of strength" that are pretty safe if done properly.

My local fair does stunts like this, it's nothing new or really that weird. Doing shows like this are also good for morale, people like seeing cool things and also training for doing cool stunt shows that make you look badass.

It's not "cool", but it's not unique or even that odd. You're getting oddly hung up on like one of the most innocuous things. This is definitely more normal than shit like the tomb of the unknown soldier ceremony or the Buckingham palace guards.
I've seen this done in the streets of the UK before. Military dudes do a sort of WWE type thing where they perform moves on each other to show how cool and tough the military is.
I mean, I've seen high school karate clubs do some of these tricks. Don't think it's particularly dangerous.
Is this that different from any other weird martial arts stuff? Like, I broke boards in karate classes as a kid. It’s just a dumb fun demonstration that kinda looks cool and looks more impressive than it actually is. They’re made to break, and if you do it correctly it doesn’t really hurt. And that mostly looks like concrete, which isn’t known for standing up well to that kind of force. Suspend a thin slab of concrete like they do here and I bet you could do the same thing - Concrete breaks really easily.

edit: more seriously, this is often seen in underdeveloped country to show how they make up their lack of advanced military equipment by showing their soldiers as tough as nails dudes.
