My go-to is a stainless steel bottle from Goodwill. They cost $5 and are very durable. Scrub with baking soda paste (baking soda + a little water), then rinse and wash with soap. Consider also putting boiling water in it.
Then bam! you've got a really nice water bottle for $5 and 5 minutes of cleaning.
Edit: Goodwill can also help with having too much choice because you can pretty much ignore any questions of manufacturing / impact because it's second-hand and your only options are whatever is in stock.
i bought an 18/10 stainless steel single wall water bottle from mizu, its bumped, scratched, paint peeling, covered in stickers and stained but it's simple and it works
$20 with a cap, you can buy different caps like with straws and shit
As a addition to this recommendation, I'd advise not to buy a metal bottle that is painted. It inevitably peels and looks/feels awful. If you can get the stainless steel version of something, go for it over paint.
I guess I hadn't thought of it that way. For me the tactile experience of the chiped paint is really grating, so I have a yeti bottle that has a really resilient coating instead of paint.
As far as water bottles go. I just buy a nalgene 32 oz wide mouth, it's cheap and lasts until I lose it. Glass is good too.

I like that though. I’ve had a hydro flask for years, and it’s wearing the drops and chips with pride
