It's almost hilarious how direct the propaganda gets - like, "the natives are using guerrilla warfare and attacking our troops but the evil lying media reporters are saying we were killing innocent civilians intentionally" is a literal plotline at one point afaik.

Someone should re-translate the subs (ignoring the actual Japanese meaning) and re-cut it to reframe it to reveal its imperialist nature more explicitly.

I have a love hate relationship with this anime.

It's trash but it's honestly really fun trash. That's kinda what makes it really good for its goal of promoting the Japanese military of course, but still.

I have a weak spot for junk-food anime (I also like Fairy Tail despite it being terrible).

It's actually quite interesting in how it depicts unapologetic imperialism, projection of soft power, building/providing infrastructure in order to gain mineral rights to steal the wealth of the land they're invading, etc etc. I do laugh in how it depicts the media as evil though and not as a willing collaborator, I guess they have to keep up the ruse that the media are a provider of criticism, checks and balances.
