Can't believe some "leftists" think he's a bad guy without acknowledging the sanctions.

I seriously think it's because most people in the USA can't really speak Spanish. I like listening to speeches by these guys and maybe they just are evil dictators who are really good at saying the right things but Castro, Maduro, Chavez etc. are all extremely reasonable sounding people compared to literally any US president.

Castro even acknowledges this in this interview lol (not everything here is perfectly translated either, so you miss out on some nuance) https://youtu.be/NmWhTKFHET0

I'm glad I know enough Spanish to understand stuff like that, especially reading transcripts. Although for me Cuban accents are pretty hard to parse 😔

I want to strap the weird reddit chauvinists to chair, teach them Spanish and then make thek watch this: https://youtu.be/-Qr4CmC1wjA

Say what you will about Cuba, the alternatives are not better and you have to be insane to imagine that the rest of Latin America is "better"

This is a really good point. Being fluent in Spanish, I think there's a cultural and linguistic understanding that ties into my appreciation of South American leaders than I kind of take for granted. Where, ironically, one of the things I really respect about them is how they totally don't give a shit about "the West" and "the first world", beyond a general "fuck you, stop fucking with us, please." like they're off in their own world, tryna do their own thing.
