I still don't understand where this carnivore diet came from? I don't think humans only ever ate just meat unless there is some history that I never learned about it.

To these guys, meat = masculine, vegetables = feminine, and they're terminally insecure about their masculinity.

“He’s a great interviewer.” Why? “He lets people speak.”

I seriously don’t get the whole Rogan at all. Just seems to me a typical, run of the mill, pot-smoking, “let the free market decide,” white privileged libertarian.

Which makes, for me, some of most loathsome qualities to have.

Yeah, maybe, he’s been enlightened out of his self-interest and faux occasional concern for capitalist oppression by the likes of Bernie, Cornel West, Russell Brand (who lately appears to have gone of the rails, chasing Rogan-like numbers by offering mostly clickbait, suddenly slightly RW-leaning red meat), etc.

But still at his core to me he’s a kind of pea-brained, macho man who says what people want to hear. In the little I’ve heard him I’ve never detected he’s got any core understanding of how capitalism is driving all iniquity.

Why would someone voluntarily subject themselves to this diet? There's mountains of research on why this is a horrible idea in every way

Lack of certain food components like fiber are thought to be a factor in colon cancer and microbiome imbalances.

There are ethnic groups that had historically near meat-only diets, mostly peoples living above the arctic circle, on arid steppe and/or at high altitudes.

The difference is that those groups ate literally all of the animal in order to get the full compliment of nutrients they needed. Organs, bone marrow, blood, etc. Not just the fucking flank steaks Rogan's gonna spend a month choking himself on.

      My favorite of the bunch:

I was just laying in bed and felt a fart coming... then i remembered a comment to "never trust a fart in your first week on carnivore"

This is one of those things that could be delicious or taste and feel exactly like regular ice cream but I would never willingly eat it because my brain knowing that it's just fat would make me gag

I still don’t understand where this carnivore diet came from?

It's either an offshoot of Atkins/Keto (which are beneficial if you have loss of pancreatic function from eating horrible American food for your entire life, or if you have other issues like celiac or gluten intolerance), or it's sheer baby-brained pseudoscience. I'm leaning towards baby-brained pseudoscience with toxic machismo characteristics.

The only viable reason I could come up with for the carnivore "diet" is if you're already doing Atkins/Keto and you need to break a stall in your weight loss, and even then, it should only be very temporary. By not eating some kind of goddamned vegetables, you're going to wind up vitamin deficient pretty quickly, to say nothing of the lack of fiber.

Source: am fat guy. Used to be much fatter guy. Trying to avoid becoming a type-2 diabetic guy.

I always read it as a "Own the Libs" rebuttal of veganism. The equivalent of rolling coal when you see a Prius or making people sign loyalty oaths to Israel to counter the BDS Movement.

That, plus the conflation of Cave Man tropes with Masculinity and the chronic desire to telegraph that you have a penis to everyone else you know online.

Its absolutely this, theres no way theres any science, even the pseudo variety, behind it.

Yeah, more than likely. That diet does have limited usefulness as a weight loss tool, but it's so stupid because there are way better options that don't involve bloody diarrhea. Also, fun fact about extreme low-carb diets: being in a state of ketosis makes alcohol and certain drugs hit you like a fucking truck. So :jordan-eboy-peterson: doing Carnivore while hooked on benzos is especially hilarious.

I'm reminded of the show "Alone", where the most efficient way to survive was simply to git gud at fishing. People who trapped rabbits or tried to scavenge off roots and berries inevitably experienced some kind of nutritional deficiency. Even a guy who brought down a deer ended up going back to fishing in short order, simply because the meat was too lean.

There's this weird mythology around Hunter-Gatherer societies that just doesn't bare out particularly well in modern practice. Maybe because we spent the last thirty thousand years functionally exterminating all the mega-fauna, while reorienting our diet around farmed grains. Maybe because the institutional knowledge is long gone. Maybe because we just have no idea what to expect in a Neanderthal Diet, and people constantly shitting their asses out or going around chronically malnourished for whole seasons was normal. But there ain't no going back, regardless.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protein_poisoning

Protein poisoning (also referred to colloquially as rabbit starvation, mal de caribou, or fat starvation) refers to an acute form of malnutrition caused by a diet deficient in fat, where almost all calories consumed come from lean meat.[1][2] The concept is discussed in the context of paleoanthropologial investigations into the diet of ancient humans, especially during the last glacial maximum and at high latitudes.[3][4]

Why fruit but not veg though? Like, even in the mind of a meathead, surely a vegetable has to be healthier way to get fibre than a fruit.

Vegetables are not a meaningful classification in any biological sense. Tomatoes are berries. Strawberries are nuts (kind of). Pumpkins are fruits, just like cucumbers.

It's just various edible parts of plants that humans have put arbitrarily into different categories without knowing anything about biology. There are dietary reasons for eating some plants over some others (taste, sugar content, fiber, allergies, nutrients etc) but if someone says "I eat only fruit" they have likely no clue what they are talking about.

I mean, why not both? There's no particular reason to abstain from either one unless you've got some kind of peculiar food allergy.
