“The pope isn’t a politician” he is literally the king of a country.
She should look into the history of the papacy and learn about the other not political things popes did, like proclaiming crusades

Feral.
She has a point hidden between those brainwormed lines of text, which is "why are you surprised when the chief of all kid-diddlers says something disagreeable?"
In fact, why even care about his opinion at all?
I mean where's the lie? It's the fucking Catholic Church. I hope nobody here expected them to be our ally in the fight for abortion rights
Okay but democrats and lefties (Even here) being continuously baffled that the Pope is Catholic is an entirely too common phenomena
Yeah I actually agree with this Tweet. Should the Pope respond differently? Well of course, but considering the Catholic Church's stance on abortion... I don't understand how anyone could be surprised? I think it's just part of the very annoying and very American tendency to try to force everything into their Red-Blue dichotomy.
Edit: I don't agree with the obvious reactionary implications - just the idea that anyone who thought he would oppose this is extremely misguided.
There are more moderate positions on abortion, even within the Catholic church leadership. Most of the Scholastics were not opposed to abortion, or opposed it on weaker ethical grounds than the killing of a human with a soul. For most of the Church's existence Abortion was not an excommunicable offence and the stance was pretty much the same as that of Islam.
This hardline stance is (what a surprise) a result of Pius IX and his fucking butthurt First Vatican Council. But yeah, US conservatives also managed to tie it to the Catholic theological basis for opposing infanticide in the mid 20th century and the rot has spread.
Yeah I've got a complicated relationship with Catholicism - I grew up in the church and then my family had this weird evangelical awakening while I was away at school. Some of my pessimism toward the church is probably projection.
You've got me curious about this topic, though. Got any links surrounding the church's history regarding abortion?
I learned it from the book A Brief, Liberal, Catholic Defense of Abortion by Daniel Dombrowski
The current pope has good politics for a pope but a misogynist is a misogynist no matter what his job title are or what excuses he makes for his reactionary bullshit.
He is...an okish...pope. The past two popes were massive conservatives so Francis looks like a radical left-winger even though he's a centre-right moderate that spent his whole career suppressing the Catholic left wing.
But... But, the pope is the elected (not by the people, by the college of cardinals) leader of a sovereign nation making direct, official statements about domestic political decisions made in another country. I get that it's not as political as changing the butt shape of a popular Fortnite character, but it is at least a little political, right?
The Vatican city should have all the wealth it stole from South America and Africa returned and all the clergy should go to prison for running an international pedophilia ring.
his defence of life
love to defend life by getting women killed in back-alley abortions and pregnancy complications
"his defense of life" lol this lib is just anti-abortion and is pissed that very few of her "allies" agree with her
