Reminds me of that old Playboy joke about the trans woman reuniting with her friends and talking about "the most painful" part of the process.

You can make jokes about trans people without them being hateful, you just have to be like, not hateful about it.

Agree with your assessment OP, it's a little dated and some elements could be seen as negative, but well-meaning and ultimately harmless, and kinda charming.
