Fortunately this stuff has mostly died down in the last ten years. Oddly enough I literally just read 5 minutes ago an article on the topic of localising names instead of using the original names.
I think for the most part this stuff has died down, it still occurs in certain long-running franchises as a result of keeping what the audience is used to in the region but isn't happening much outside of that.. Except for the whole "Bam" vs "Yoru" drama that occurred for Tower of God.
It seems more common in videogames than it is in shows. Probably because game developers are completely ignorant of languages and cultures or have corporate marketing departments with soulless, creativeless shells of human beings that make these decisions.
The localization is so fucking bizarre it makes no fuckign sense i think its completely an american thing and its not the game writers nor the developers who have cpontroll over this its the fucking capitalists and their goons i want fucking hang them
The whole localization shit is purely some racist anglo creation theres no reason any creator would allow their work to be tarnished willingly because westerners cant imagine some other people would adress some poepoel differently
Lmao that translation choice is bizarre but I do understand how incredibly difficult it was... It's a really hard thing to translate properly. I would have preferred some overtly serious "my lady" or some such.
What would you have preferred it be in English? Has anyone really managed to offer a good alternative for this honorific when used as a petname?
I think I agree with not translating it. And yes it is big-weeb. But cultural preservation within the content is pretty much essential and should take precedent, it's weird when they change things to be "american".
